Monotypes - by Julia Ayres
Current Techniques with water-based materials

The interest in creating monotypes with water-based colors has increased substantially in recent years. Watercolourists in particular, are well-suited to this means of expression, since it is compatible with the techniques and tools they are already using. It's been exciting to share this discovery process with other artists through my work.

There are four basic elements to the monotype process: the plate, the colors, the paper, and the transfer mechanism. The nonglare plastic used to glaze watercolour paintings works especially well as a plate, as does 1/8 inch thick clear acrylic sheets. A drawing that is placed under the transparent plate acts as a guide when applying colour to the top side of the transparent surface.

Watercolours, water-soluble printing inks, and Createx monotype colors are among the media currently used for making watercolour based monotypes. The colours brush easily on a printing plate with watercolour brushes or soft rubber brayers. After the painted plates dry, they are printed on moist paper using a variety of methods.

An etching or lithographic press is an ideal tool for printing monotyes. The advantage of mechanical presses is that the paper and plate can be pressed together with heavy, even, controlled pressure, but few artists can afford one for their studio. As an alternative, artists can hand-rub the paper and plate, or use either a brayer made for printing woodcuts or the metal printing pin recently introduced by Createx Colors. The metal pin rolls the plate and paper together in a manner similar to an etching press. Hand-transferred prints require more moisture than those transferred by a press, and a good guide is to print just after the last reflection of water leaves the paper surface.

Arches 88 is a reliable choice of paper for most monotypes. Misting moistens this waterleaf paper, and its smooth, absorbent surface facilitates the transfer of the image.

As with several other printing processes, the printed image will be a reverse of the one applied to the plate. For that reason, if artists want to include words, clocks, compasses, or other objects that need to read correctly, they have to paint them in reverse on the monotype plate. Likewise, if they want the center of interest to appear on the right side of the print, it has to be painted on the left. Using a reversed drawing as a guideline helps to maintain this perspective so the printed monotype will read correctly.

Because watercolours are very transparent, it is necessary to be generous with their application as they dry lighter. To ensure that all the colour transfers, cover the plate with a thin layer of gum arabic first.

If you are interested in this art form, our member Diane Estabrook has a printing press, and would love to have members come over to her studio and try this creative approach. Check with Dona Smithson and Kate Kimberly to start a list and we will come up with a date! (Minimal cost for supplies.)

***FOR YOUR INFORMATION***

We recently received a letter from the Standards Chair, of the FCA, Janice Robertson that a six person committee met and made three new rulings:

1. Juried Chapter shows can now include non-qualifying paintings if there aren’t enough qualified paintings to make a show. “Chapter’s Choice” wording will be eliminated and referred to as ‘non-qualifying’ paintings. Qualifying paintings will be clearly marked with labels designed and sent from FCA headquarters in Vancouver.

2. Recommended individual submissions for a juried show are now 6, with maximum of 3 to be chosen.

3. This third decision has not rested easily with our group, and our secretary, Brad Hillis has written a great letter voicing our concerns.

- There will no longer be critiques returned to us when our images are declined for a juried show. Alternatives being considered by the FCA are- more group critiques, or charging a critique fee for individuals by application.

We await their reply.

For anyone thinking of experimenting with the beauty of oils, or to just refresh your techniques…I hope you enjoy this -

Oil Painting Techniques: Making it Simple

Oil painting is straightforward, far simpler than etching or even watercolour painting. If you can see something, you can paint it in oils. To create something memorable, however, you need to:

1. Formulate what you hope to achieve, and devise a workable route to that objective.

2. Research the market if you wish to sell the work.

3. Approach the painting process in logical steps, which usually entail:

A. drawings to investigate compositional possibilities.

B. blocked-out charcoal/pencil/oil sketches to arrange tonal values.

C. oil sketches to experiment with various color schemes and harmonies.

D. preparing canvas and paint for the anticipated task

E. applying paint to canvas, either incorporating the results of b and c in direct

painting, or by tackling them in distinct phases.

F. varnishing, framing and hanging the work.

Yes, it does help to know what you're about. But though the objectives of painting, and even how to go about them, can all be stated in a few pages:

1. Acquiring the necessary eye and manual skill takes years, and

2. Producing something significant requires individual gifts, strong personal qualities and unceasing application.

Whatever you attempt, you'll get there quicker if you appreciate the larger dimensions of oil painting techniques, and continually study the work of other practitioners, both the old and contemporary masters

BITS & PIECES

· Lloyd Gallery update: There was a small very successful fundraiser in Summerland where artists donated some lovely work and businesses donated also. Alphonse and Nel were very moved by the generosity of everyone and the kind gesture of Anne Currie for organizing it!.

Besides the Whittman's loss, our hearts go out to the artists who lost their work also!

· We had 3 paintings sold at Handworks Gallery - Grace Shaw, Barb Mosby and Dianne Korsch
The second group will be at Lang's until the end of October. To date, we have had 8 sales there. (Lynne Marana-2, Velma Bateman-2, Dianne Korsch-2, Barb Mosby-1, Bonny Roberts-1.)

· Laila Campbell is still looking for more jpeg images

Good news from Laila:
First, two paintings were chosen by the Quebec company Pierre Belevedere Inc. to be part of their Artists in Canada Series for cards and their cataloque and the cover will be one of my works.
As well the cover of the latest Thompson Okanagan Wine and Cultural Guide chose one of my paintings " The Wine Tastes Fine." They also bought the painting, which was great!

At the moment I am busily painting for Wine Festival Show held at the Evans Gallery in Kelowna the end of September and trying to paint new works to replace those that were lost in the Lloyd Gallery fire, so that hopefully I will have something ready for their new gallery.
