from the CHAIR
Well I hope everyone had an enjoyable Christmas Holiday and a great New Year celebration. As we are starting another year I would like to welcome all the new members that joined in the last few months. We are up to 95 members in our Chapter.
Just a reminder that our Annual General Meeting will be in March and we are still looking for a few individuals that could donate a small amount of time to help our Chapter have a successful year. If you are interested in helping please contact Thea Haubrich, Dale Matthews or Joan Landsdell.
If you have any suggestions on what you would like to see at one of our programs please let Dianne Korsch or Dona Smithson know.
For
all the new members could you send your BIO's to Judy Byer. We use the BIO's
for our shows. Also for existing members please update your BIO's and send
to Judy.
The BIO's should be two page BIOs. (i.e. the first page could have a picture
of the artist and a write-up about the artist and the second page could
be samples of work). This is so when the BIO is open it has something about
the artist on the left and samples of work on the right. As we sometimes
have shows running close together it would be appreciated if we could have
two copies of your BIO.
We are gearing up for another year and we expect to have many shows, both Juried and Non-Juried. So I hope everyone have been painting lots.
Thanks for your continuing support;
- Brad Hillis, FCA-SOS Chair

Bethany Handfield - Bethany's Mexico Adventures (Part One)
My parents took the whole family to Mexico this year for Christmas and what a wonderful time we all had. We were staying in a tiny fishing village called Boca de Tomatlan that is just south of Puerto Vallarta. As you can see from the map, anywhere past Boca on the coast was accessible by boat only.
We stayed at Casa La Ventana (www.casalaventana.com) which is a gorgeous b & b nestled in the jungle hillside of Boca. You can see it there on the left all snuggled in (orange building). There were no cars allowed on our side of town (stairs, stairs & more stairs everywhere!) as were really in the jungle mountainside and we certainly got our exercise every day.
As PV was only 30 minutes away by bus (the adventures on the PV bus system are another story!) my mom and I ventured into town to check out the gallery scene. We were blown away by the friendliness of everyone we met and the amazing works of art we saw.
Our first stop was Galleria Dante (www.galleriagadante.com) where we met one of the co-owners Claire Guarniere. You can visit more work by the artists mentioned here on their website.
You can see an encaustic painting by Leticia Schmidt ("La Feria") hanging over my mom Maggie (holding the yellow bag) and Claire. Here is another painting by Leticia called "Cumpleanos de la Luna". She paints on many different surfaces, including brushed metal.
Galleria Dante is very large, included a courtyard sculpture garden, and is a great place to view many of PV's most popular artists. Here are some sculptures by Gabriel Colunga in the lovely garden.

"Libertad" & "Piramide Grande" - - - - - - - - - - - - "Rueda Manual"
Rogelio Diaz's work needs to be seen in person to really get the full impact. There are so many layers, textures, and images blending together, it is certainly a feast for the eyes. Here are some examples of his work.
"Noche de Carnaval "
"Mezclando Colores para Convertirlos en Sueños"
Jesse Reno is based in Portland, Oregon. His work was among my favorites of the trip. I am hoping to take a workshop from him at Art Fest 2012 in Port Townsend, WA (http://www.teeshamoore.com/artfest/jreno/ftc/class.html ) Let me know if you want to go.
"There Are Many Hands Reaching for Magic"
The Galleria Dante is part of the "South Side Shuffle" and art walk that encompasses the Basilio Badillo and Constitucion streets. I also visited Galaria Puerco Azul which is on the art walk.
(Mexican Wrestlers painting by Lunecho)
I don't know the name of this artist but I had to include this giant paper machete mariachi man!
My next stop was to the studio of Jose Marca. Jose is a self-taught artist and has a great spirit. He welcomed my mother & I into his studio (which was also his home!) and gave us a look at some of his works in progress. He was frustrated with his lack of gallery representation and decided to go it by himself and now has a flourishing shop front. If you are visiting the Zona Romantica area of PV I would highly recommend stopping by his studio and having a chat. He was definitely another favorite. Please visit his website www.josemarca.com.mx
That's all for part one. I hope you have enjoyed it. I have a few more galleries and artists to put in the next newsletter.
Thanks Bethany, I think we should all do this next winter!!!!!!!
